If you have found yourself on this page, you likely already know at least my name. Algorithmic throttling does not precisely favor a lowly resume WordPress page. Nevertheless, a proper introduction is still in order. My name is Tom Plazek, a recent graduate from the University of Pittsburgh. I hold a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Environmental Science with a GIS certificate. I am originally from Pittsburgh and have lived there all of my life, making Pitt a great choice for university. With access to a strong geology and environmental science department, I was able to hone and develop my skills in reasoning and critical thinking both in the sciences and in general. Pitt helped me build a solid framework for applying the scientific method across a wide spectrum of disciplines.
I found GIS to be the most interesting field to me. Preparing and visualizing spatial data along with related database management are tasks that I find to be rewarding (though some people call me insane). I am well-versed in ESRI environments, such as ArcGIS and ArcGIS Online, as well as highly functioning in both QGIS and R. Many of the skills I have acquired during my education in these respects have been self-taught. This is not a criticism of the curriculum at Pitt as much as it is a testament to the vast applications of these technologies. In addition to developing my GIS skills, as well as broadening my knowledge of natural studies, I have honed my skill in scientific writing and editing. Doing the science is only one aspect of the work – communicating it to others clearly and effectively is arguably as important as the research itself.
Now, a little more about me as a person. During my spare time you will most likely find me in the gym lifting some heavy weights, taking long walks (usually introspective) and spending time with my close friends and family. I like to practice wellness methods such as breathing techniques and cold plunges as well.
